These are unprecedented times in our community and Hillview misses every single student and family. With everchanging shifts in our daily routines, maintaining self-care in the moment is essential now more than ever.
To truly practice self-care is to pay attention to every aspect of ourselves: physically, spiritually, psychologically, emotionally, personally, and professionally. This is symbolized in our self-care wheel below.
Also below are example activities we compiled for our community as we to continue to social-distance ourselves. Start with one activity you already enjoy and see how you can incorporate a few other activities into your daily life.
We will be together again. In the meantime, please explore ways to self-care below.
Physical Activities
- Stock up and prioritize healthy eating
- Get some free exercise through Fitness Blender, a 7-minute workout, or 305 Fitness
- Get enough sleep
- Give yourself a massage
- Take a walk at home or walk outside (but practice 6+ foot social distancing)
Spiritual Activities
- Go into nature virtually at five National Parks or at the Monterey Bay Aquarium
- Meditate through Insight Timer
- Host or join a Zoom/Google Hangout/FaceTime karaoke
- Dance at a weekly dance party or watch a dance performance online
- Play and spend quality time with family at Disney World...virtually
- Take yoga for free with Adriene or Yoga Works
- Help your community while social distancing
- Donate to the food bank
- Offer assistance to at-risk neighbors like picking up food and/or prescriptions
- Plan to stay in touch with neighbors, loved ones, colleauges, etc. through virtual meetups or phone calls
Psychological Activities
- Self-reflect
- Journal
- Relax through DIY aromatherapy
- Draw with free online classes
- Attend online at the Night Met Opera, Melbourne Symphony Orchestera, or Berliner Philharmoniker
- Grow some herbs indoors
- Join a support group
Emotional Activities
- Listen to music at Tiny Desk Concerts or upcoming live streams
- Watch a funny movie
- Find a new indoor hobby
- Cuddle with your pet
Personal Activities
- Plan short and long-term goals through a vision board
- Foster relationship virtually or through letters
- Spend time with your family by visiting a museum like the British Museum, Guggenheim Museum, or National Gallery of Art
- Learn new ways to cook at home
- Learn to play guitar for free
Professional Activities
- Take time for lunch
- Set boundaries, leave work at work
- Get support from colleagues
- Take free classes through Coursera, edX, University of Oxford, and/or MIT
- Learn a new language
